Royal Fencible Americans
Howe to Gorham

Philadelphia 27th November 1777

Sir,

Your Letters of the 6th of June has been received with the Recommendations enclos’d, and the Promotions have been made accordingly-

The Succession in the Place of Major BATT remains open, and three Second Lieutenants are still vacant, which will not be filled up before I receive Accounts of the Corps being more complete.

The Orders you have given for Cloathing from England must be considered as an Act of your own, having received no Powers from me for so doing.

The Cloathing sent out for Governor LEGGE’s Corps was deemed, upon its Reduction, sufficient to supply both for this Year, and Major General MASSEY has my Orders on that Head.

For this Reason you may conclude I cannot furnish you with Money to make good your Engagements to Alderman HARLEY.

I am,
Sir &c &c
[signed]   W HOWE
