21st June [1781] Doctor SMITH of Albany, my best Intelligencer, is just come in having escaped from the Hands of the Rebels on his Way to Jail. He attributes his being seized to his having given You late Intelligence, and suspects some of Your Domestics of betraying him to Washington, who wrote to the Commissioners of Conspiracies that a Plot was on Foot, and SMITH was immediately ordered to be seized and loaded with Irons. Should his Suspicion be well founded, I hope he will arrive Time enough to prevent greater Evils. No Victuallers yet arrived or heard of. I shall be obliged to purchase at a vast Expence.
