Extract of a Letter from the Right Honorable Lord George GERMAINE dated Whitehall 5th August 1778 to Colonel John STUART Superintendant.
The measures taken by Governors CHESTER & Yourself for the Security of the Frontiers appear to have been the best You could have adopted in such Circumstances, & I am very glad the Inhabitants at the Natchez had recovered from the Consternation the Suddeness and unexpectedness of the Attack made upon them had occasion'd and had been so successful in defeating the Party of Plunderers that were returning from New Orleans further to harass them. The Orders You mention to have received from Sir William HOWE to raise a fourth Company of Loyal Refugees is undoubtedly a sufficient Warrant for your doing so but it will be proper for You to transmit Copies of that Order and of those for raising the former three together with as exact and certified Return of the whole to the Lords of the Treasury when You draw for their Subsistence.
