Extract of a Letter from his Excellency Sir William HOWE dated New York 3d of May 1777 to John STUART Esqr. Superintendant.
The Directions You received in my Letter of the 13th of January for raising and paying such of his Majesty's faithfull Subjects as may have taken Refuge amongst the Indians from the Persecution of the Rebells or who hereafter may be compelled to do it, will I hope furnish sufficient number of good men accustomed to their methods of making war to reside amongst them and to act with them upon all Occasions. Companies form'd of Persons well acquainted with the back parts of Carolina & Georgia if put under the Conduct of proper Officers may be of infinite use in directing the Indians, to any Object You may have in view for them to execute.
