Charlestown Janry. 18th 1781 Sir The Commandant has received & directed me to acknowledge your favor of yesterday: I am also honored with orders to express in his Name the fullest sense of your Services & good Conduct, in dispersing the Banditti, which of late have so much infested your parts of the Country. Those persons who have quitted their Habitations & associated themselves with such Lawless Plunderers, having, thereby, put themselves out of the Kings protection, the Commandant requests you will be pleased to seize on their properties, Especially on the Effects of those mentioned in the Examinations you have transmitted him, and send as soon as possible, an Account of your proceedings to John CRUDEN Esqr., that they may [be] disposed of in like manner as other Sequestered Estates. The Commandant further requests you will send prisoners, to this place, all those whom you may discovere to have been any ways concerned in those Destructive practices as the only means he can devise of restoring tranquility & good order within your District.
