I inclose for your perusal a copy of my letter to Brigadier General MUHLENBERG, his Answer inclosing a copy of a letter from Captain McCREA, and a letter from Captain McCREA to me.

I wish you to make enquiry and inform me if Captain McCREA has been guilty of the inhumanity with which he is charged.

If he has not, he ought to disavow the fact, and explain his letter to Colonel PARKER, which you will please to inform him I think highly improper and imprudent, and if the Standing order for the Commanding Officer of the Fort has been regularly transmitted agreeable to my order, Captain McCREA’s conduct in leaving his Post to attack the Enemy has been very blameable indeed.

His threat to burn is still more so, as he knows it is contrary to repeated orders.

I am sorry that an Officer of so much bravery should have been so unguarded, and imprudent, as to lay me under the disagreeable necessity of making these remarks in his conduct.
