Head Quarters 3d August 1777- Sir Happening to be at Head Quarters with the Lieut General Sir Henry CLINTON when the Enclosed Note was Sent Him from Maj'r General TRYON Certefing the Person therein named (Edward PALMER) to be an Officer in his Majesty's Service & Taken up by the Enemy on Suspicion of his being a Spy- I am therefore to desire from him that You will forthwith dispatch a Boat up with a Flag of Truce & a proper Officer to the Enemy's first Post which Seems to be Virplanks Point, where He is to deliver to the person hyhest in Rank, who shall receive Him, the Above Certificate in order to prevent Lieut PALMERs being maltreated- The General Judges sending a Flag by Water the Most expeditious Method in which I am to desire not a Moments Time may be Lost as the Prisoners Life from this Mistake is said to be in danger-
