No. 52 Gold-Street New York 19th March 1783 Sir As I have been confined to my Room ever Since your Corp's returned to this Garrison from Carolina has prevented my waiting on You in person, to lay before you my demands against your Regiment and to communicate my demands against Lt. PETERSON- as I am still confined am Obliged to Trouble you with a representation by Letter. The 3rd January 1782 Mr. Cosby HUNT, Lt. of your Corps sent Sarjent GORDON to me desiring I would (I at that time had closed business) furnish the Regiment with one Hundred pair of warm Leggings that I would purchase the material and get them made as Cheap as possible- to Oblige the Regiment I purchased all the things necessary and Sargent WALLICE cutt them out and made most of them which I paid him & Orders, for they amounted to £ 37. 10. 0. Stg. the exact money I paid for them- and was delivered to the Sargent who Oversee the making of them. About a month After there was twenty paire returned to my Store with saying they were not Large enough for the men- eighty of which was made use of. These twenty pair being too small was no fault of mine- as I only advanced the Cash for them and they were cutt and made under the direction of the Sargent, sent on purpose for this business- whoever improper, I am very Willing to loose the twenty pair and only demand pay for the Eighty made use of- which I doubt not you will see properly Adjusted. There is Also Thirty odd pounds Stg. due me from the Regt. ever since Decr. 1780 for Sargents Hatts, & browne Duffells for Trowsers- delivered the Regt. by Your & then Capt. COFFINs desire. The duffels &c you desired I would buy of Messrs. FORBES & STEVEN as you liked it. This matters was undertaken by COFFIN to settle- for payment he gave his Order & drawn by Geo: HARDWICK On Lewis JOHNSTON Junr. Esqr. Savannah this returned to me protested- and it has ever since been due me. I wrote Major COFFIN a few Days ago an this Subject- and insisted on immediate payment. He promised to lay the matter before you and to have it settled directly. Lieut. PETERSON in March 1781- when He was Ordered to joine his Regiment, from Charlestown to it then at Camden- being greatly indebted for board & other Necessarys- merely out of respect to the Corps paid his Bills &c. to amount of 32. 11. 11. Stg. to inable him to joine. Never since have recd. but £ 8. 15. 0. Stg. which was of Capt. GREY- he still owes me £ 23. 16. 11. besides for matters he took out of Lt. HUNT's things he had the care of- and for which, and other very extra- ordinary matters he was Ordered to Charlestown to Clere-up His Character for. These Circumstances are well Known to many of the Officers of your Regiment. Have Sir therefore to request Your Friendship and attention to the justice of my demands- and cannot but flatter my Self you will see that payment is made to me. I wish not to say much of Mr. GIBB- but be Assured no person has suffered so much as my Self by that uncommon Man.
