New York the 4th Septr. 1783

These are to Certify that Adam GRAVES of Maryland having been appointed Captain and received a Warrant to raise and inlist a Company of Volunteers for His Majesty under a Warrant from me who had a Warrant and Orders for that purpose from John GRIFFETH and Joseph ROBERTSON and they from Lord William CAMPBELL,

and being detected by the Rebels was confined in Jail in Irons then tried and Condemned to be Hanged and Quartered then afterwards reprieved from Death and transported to serve on Board of a French Man of War for Term of Life;

and has since made his escape with his Brother John George GRAVES and Nicholas ANDRES who was under the same sentence and have got to this City and is now going to England for Relief as their Estates are confiscated and sold and they and their Families in the utmost distress.
