By Major-General WHEREAS many of His Majesty's Loyal Subjects, inhabiting the Town of Newport, are willing to associate for the Purpose of preserving the internal Peace and Security of the Town, and to perform such other Duties as the Commanding Officer of His Majesty's Troops within this Colony shall think necessary:- I have therefore thought fit, in Order to give all possible Encouragement to a Spirit so truly laudable and proper, to permit His Majesty's liege Subjects, inhabiting this Town, to agree and associate, for the Purpose aforesaid; and, to that End, have directed an AGREEMENT to be lodged at the Printing Office; where the steady and firm Friend to his King and the Laws may, by subscribing thereto, have an Opportunity of distinguishing himself from the disaffected. Given under my Hand, at Head Quarters in Newport, this 15th Day of October, 1777. R. PIGOT By the General's Command, The Newport Gazette, October 23rd, 1777.
