The Memorial of Nathaniel VERNON, Abraham IREDELL, Abraham PASTORIUS, and John KNIGHT, Lieutenants of the Corps of Guides and Pioneers. Humbly Sheweth That your Memorialists from pure principles of Loyalty and Attachment to His Majestys Person and Government, left their plentifull habitations, to support that Government by Acting in the most precarius Station, As Guides to the Royal Army On every Occasion whilst In the Province of Pennsylvania, where the many Exertions by Our knowledge of the Country were Attended with Success beyond the expectations of the Gentlemen who had the Honour to Command the different detachments to which we Acted as Guides. Your Memorialists beg leave to Inform Your Excellency that they have On Many Occasions been Honoured with the thanks of Sr. William HOWE for the particular Services they Rendered to the Royal Army for which Sr. William HOWE was Pleased to present your Memorialists with Lieutenants Commissions with the promise of A Continuance of the same for Life. It is Unfortunate for your Memorialists that General ABERCROMBY, Colonel BALFOUR and Colonel SIMCOE Are Not here At present as they would fully Satisfy Your Excellency, Respecting what Your Memorialists has Asserted but As there are many Gentleman of the Army On the spot who Are in some measure Acquainted with the services we have Rendered we beg leave to Refer Your Excellency to them As Allso to Mr. SHOEMAKER and Mr. POTTS both from the City of Philadelphia. Your Memorialists were At All times more severely threatened by the Rebels than any Others in Pennsylvania who Came within the British Lines On Account of their Acting as Guides to the Army, the Rebels having Sold the whole of their property and there being No prospect of Recovering Any part of the same Your Memorialists Relying On Your Excellency’s Willingness to Comply with the promises we Received from Sr. William HOWE so far As Your Excellency may have the Same in Your power to Grant. The Pease And the present Movements of the Army is Alarming to Your Memorialists As they Are Not doing duty with the Corps of Guides and Pioneers And do Not know Whither they are Entitled to portions of Lands with that Corps Or in what Light they are to be Considered in future. We therefore pray your Excellency to take Our Cases into Consideration and give Such Orders Respecting the same As to Your Excellency’s well known wisdom in our present situation may Appear to Your Excellency to be just. And Your Memorialists As In duty Bound Will Pray
