Report on Disbanding Emmerick's Chasseurs, 1 September 1780 |
Copy The Deputy Inspectr. Genl. of Provl. Forces In consequence of your Excellency’s Commands I have perused Capt. Muirsons Memorial to Lord George Germain, & upon the strictest Enquiry I find the Matter to be as follows. The continual Disputes & Quarrels among the officers of Lt. Colo. Emmericks Corps occasioned several courts martial – notwithstanding, frequent complaints were made by Lieut. Colo. Emmerick against his officers, & by them against him, which brought on a total Relaxation of Discipline. The men seeing the Situation of the Regiment deserted, half a dozen at a Time. Capt. Muirson with some other officers of the corps gave in a memorial, containing Capital charges against Lt. Colo. Emmerick Their Commanding Officer, which upon Examination turned out to be absolute falsehoods, which can be proved by Extracts of Letters from Captain Muirson & the officers of his Troop to Lieut. Colo. Emmerick. His Excellency the Commander in Chief finding there was no possibility of expecting Service from a Regiment in that State, gave orders for annihilating the Corps. Such Officers whose Character & Behaviour recommended them to the Generals Favor, were with their men incorporated into other Battalions – the remaining officers had leave to quit the Service with a gratuity of three months full Pay.
