Jama. Queens County Sepr. 5th 1776 His Exelency The Honble William HOW General & Commander in Chief of all his Majesties Forces within the Colonies lying on the Atlantic Ocean from Nova Scotia to West Florida inclusive &c &c &c having Authorized me to raise a Brigade of Provincials Solely for the defence of this Island and to reestablish Order, and Goverment within the Same, to Apprehend or drive all Concealed Rebels from among his Majesties well Affected Subjects & other essential Purposes, I do hereby for the Encouragement of Inlisting men in the County of Suffolk give notice that upon any persons of good recommended Characters raising a Company of Seventy Men, they shall have Commissions for one Captain one Lieutenant & one Ensign & shall be paid & Subsisted as the Officers & Soldiers are in the British pay, and it is hoped that the Inhabitants of the County will Chearfully raise the men wanted for this Service, as it will Prevent the Disagreeable business of Detaching them, which I shall be under the Necessity of doing if the Companies cannot be raised without it.
