Loyalist Muster Rolls |

Upon the advance of Lord CORNWALLIS and the British Army into North Carolina in 1781, several warrants were issued to Loyalists whose influence it was presumed would enable them to raise at least a company each for His Majesty's service. Virtually none of these came to fruition with the exception of one raised by Captain Eli BRANSON. Known simply as "The" North Carolina Independent Company, this unit of perhaps 35 officers and men continued with CORNWALLIS through the Virginia Campaign of 1781 and surrendered at Yorktown. There are very few rolls in existence for this unit, and none for 1781, the year they were raised. The rolls that do exist start in 1782 while the company remained prisoners with the Rebels and then continue to 1783, with the exchanged survivors at New York. They may be found at the National Archives of Canada in the Ward Chipman Papers, MG 23, Volumes 27 & 30.
