Memorial of Andrew MacKenzie of South Carolina

To the Honorable The Commissioners
appointed by Act of Parliament for enquiring
into the Losses and Services of the American
Loyalists.

The Memorial of Andrew MACKENZIE

Sheweth

That your Memorialist Resided in Charlestown South Carolina as a Merchant for several years previous to the Commencement of the late unfortunate War, and took every opportunity of evincing his attachment to his Sovereign and the British Constitution, particularly by assisting in Carrying on the Correspondence between Lord William CAMPBELL and the Friends of Government in the Interior parts of the Province at the risque of his Life and property.

That your Memorialist was immediately after the Surrender of Charlestown appointed by Colonel BALFOUR a Captain of Militia in Charlestown, & Continued to Serve in that Capacity until the evacuation of that Garrison.

That your Memorialist Carried on Trade in Charlestown for Several years to a Considerable extent, which enabled him to live in a respectable line in that Country, with the prospect of making a fortune in a few years, but his Conduct & known attachment to the British Constitution having Rendered him obnoxious to the People of that Country, his Person is Banished from thence and his property forfeited by an Act of their Legislature dated 26th February 1782.

That your Memorialists property from the nature of his business Consisted chiefly in Debts due by the People of Carolina, the Specialtys for which he left there, agreeably to the Amount mentioned in the annexed Schedule.

Your Memorialist therefore Prays that his Case may be taken into your Consideration in order that your Memorialist may be enabled, under your Report, to Receive such Aid or Relief as his losses & Services may be found to deserve.
