Northumberland House 13th Decr. 1777 My Lord Allow me to recommend to your Lordships particular Notice the Bearer of this Mr. Timothy HURST to whose Information & Kind Assistance I was singularly indebted whilst I had the Honor of Commanding His Majesty's Troops on York Island during the time Sr. Wm. HOWE & the Army were on the White Plains in Consequence of his report & the Intelligence of the Rebel Force gained by this Gentleman at the Risk of his Life & the loss of his Fortune the Attack on Fort Lee in the Jersies was Undertaken and to his Steady Behaviour afterwards are chiefly to be attributed the Brilliant Successes which attended his Majestys Arms in the Jersies till the Affair at Trenton in justice to his Uncommon merits & in Consideration of his great losses on that Account, I cannot refuse him this Letter of recommendation to your Lordship as a Person highly deserving the particular attention of Government from the great Services he has rendered it.
