The Memorial of Thomas William-Willett BEAVEN's Humbly sheweth; That, the Memorialist from a very early Period has uniformly sustained the Character of a Loyalist, and served a volunteer under Colonel BREWERTON, upon the reduction of Long Island, but declined accepting the Colonel's Company, when the Battalion was raised by him, having fondly encouraged the Hope that the old civil establishment would have taken place & the memorialist been able to execute the office of Examiner to the Court of Chancery for this Province & an Attorney at Law. The Memorialist has since been appointed Clerk of the County of Suffolk on Long-Island, but hath never received any emolument from his Appointments, or the smallest aid from Government. That, he is now obliged to quit his native Country, and is going to New Providence, distressed & friendless- destitute, not only of a sufficiency to carry him there in genteel Character, but even to procure common Necessaries for the voyage, & has this Additional misfortune, that he carries with him a venerable mother very far advanced in years. The Memorialist begs leave to inform your Excellency that while he served with Col. BREWERTON, he was twice a Volunteer from the Company on very hazardous Service. The Memorialist therefors as an Officer of the civil Government & a suffering Loyalist most humbly implores that your Excellency will be pleased to consider his Character & Distresses from his Attachment to Government & grant him some small Allowance as a Compensation for his Services, Sufferings & the Loss of his Appointments, or such other relief as Your Excellency shall think expedient. And as in Duty bound he shall ever Pray &c. Thom. W. W. BEAVANS N. York Great Britain, Public Record Office, Head Quarters Papers of the British Army in America, PRO 30/55/10183.
