By James PATTISON Esqr. Major General of His Majesty’s Forces, Commandant of New York &c &c &c. To Joel STONE Esqr. Greeting You having been nominated at a meeting of respectable Citizens, as Captain of one of the City Companies embodied in consequence of the Proclamation lately issued by me for that purpose, which nomination I do approve and confirm. Now therefore, reposing special Trust and Confidence as well in the care and diligence, as in the Loyalty and Courage of you the said Joel STONE. I do hereby constitute and appoint you to be Captain of a Company of Foot in the New York City Militia, known by Company number twenty two (whereof Willet TAYLOR Esqr. Was lately Captain but has since resigned) and you are hereby Authorised and directed to take the said Company under your Care and Training, the Officers, Non commissioned Officers and Privates enrolled in, and belonging to, the said Company, being hereby strictly charged to conform to and obey all such orders as they may from time to time receive from you, or any Officer you may appoint under you to assist in the care of the said Company, and you are to observe and follow all such Orders and Directions, as you shall from time to time receive from the Commandant of this City and Garrison for the time being, or any other your superior Officer. Given under my Hand and Seal, in the City of New York, the twenty ninth day of March, in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and Eighty and in the Twentieth year of his Majesty’s Reign.
