Wreck of the North and the St. Helena

Halifax
December 14, 1779.


Last Saturday Morning between one and two o’clock, his Majesty’s sloop of war the North, and the armed ship St. Helena, in coming into this harbour from Spanish River, (the Night being very dark, and a S: East storm) were unfortunately drove ashore about a league from the Light-House, by which accident both ships are entirely lost, and about 170 persons were drowned, amongst which are

belonging to the North
          Capt. Gerard SELBY, Lieut. BROOK, Lieut. BUTLER of the Marines,
          Mr. POULDEN Purser,
          Mr. WILSON Master’s Mate,
          The Surgeon, Petty Officers, and all the Crew, the Boatswain and two men excepted.
          Captain John MacLEAN of the 84 Regiment Passenger on board the North.

SAVED on Board of St. HELENA
          Lieut. ROBERTSON Agent of Transports, three officers belonging to the 74th Regiment Passengers, and all the hands, except one man.
