Loyal Refugee Volunteers
Acceptance of Offer of Assistance

No. 12

Copy of a Letter from Captain WARD to Governor FRANKLIN dated 18th Novr. 1780-

Sir

As I would wish to continue at Bergen Point this Winter, with such Loyalists as may see fit to stay and maintain the Post; I would request that Governor FRANKLIN would interest himself in my Favour, in respect of getting Accoutrements for a Troop of Horsemen, as I think we may harrass our Enemies and be of Service to Government during the ensuing Winter.

Men and Horses can be procured to fill the Troop immediately; and as we have a sufficient Number of Infantry to to [sic] act either offensively or defensively I think we may render Satisfaction to His Excellency the Commander in Chief.

Captain McMICHAEL, with his Company of Riflemen, is going over with me this Afternoon, and rest assured that anything in my Power shall not be wanting in order to give convincing Proofs of our Loyalty;

we may want a few Peices of Artillery, as I am conscious the Rebels will attempt our Post if the Winter should prove favourable to their Attempts.

I expect an Augmentation of Refugees very shortly, and have the Vanity to think, that we will render His Excellency Satisfaction;

but at the same Time will inform you that we will immediately put ourselves in a State of Defence at our Posts by Fortification, and be assured we will maintain it if in our Power-

Sir
I am your Obedient humble Servant
Thomas WARD
