St. Augustine Barracks 10th May 1783 Sir Agreeable to His Excellency the Commander in Chiefs Order of date the 26th Ultimo, respecting the disposition of the Officers and Soldiers of the Regiment under my Command, I have @ your desire collected as near as possible the most exact information. As almost the whole of the Regiment both Officers and Soldiers had property in America (more or less) and by the Fifth Prelimenary Article are entirely excluded from returning or having the least claim whatsoever to-any part of whatever little may be now remaining, and as the reasons are Numerous wherein they cannot think of returning- or of ever living among People whom they have bore Arms against, and have strove to suppress with the utmost Vigor. You will please therefore represent to His Excellency the Commander in Chief that the Officers being entirely destitute of the least support, except what little they may expect from their Gracious Sovereign for their Services, are unanimously resolved to Embark for some British Settlement, however soon they may be ordered, either to Britain, Hallifax or the West Indies, and that they will regulate their Course for either of these places, however soon any Provision made for them are made known. You will likewise please intimate to His Excellency that almost the whole of the Non Commission'd Officers and Soldiers are of the same resolution, except a few in Number, who have families in some remote parts of the continent, who seem rather desirous of having their Discharge here before they Embark, being under some apprehension of being for ever separated from their families, and sent to the East or West indies to serve for life.
