Witness on behalf of William Cunningham of South Carolina

Copy.

London 16th May 1786

I do hereby certify that I knew Mr. William CUNYNGHAM soon after the Surrender of Charlestown; that I found him in one of the most distant parts of the Province of South Carolina, exerting himself in a very active & Spirited manner against the enemy. And I do further certify that, by Order of Lord CORNWALLIS, he was appointed a Captain in a Corps of Provincial Cavalry commanded by Major DUNLAPP [Dunlop], which Corps, being almost totally destroyed by service, and Major DUNLAPP [Dunlop] killed, Mr. CUNYNGHAM was afterwards appointed Major in a Corps of Cavalry consisting of four Troops, where he continued until the evacuation of the Province.

In the absence of Earl CORNWALLIS, who I am confident would have recommended Mr. CUNYNGHAM in a very particular manner, and being well acquainted with his real services, I bear this testimony to his Zeal, loyalty and gallant behaviour, which was very strongly marked in that Province on all occasions, and reported as such to me, by every Officer under whom he served.
