Decision on the Claim of James Reading of New York

READING, James  —  a Black  —  New York

5th Sept. 1783


He lived about 7 Miles from New York, he says he was born free, he is about 40 years of Age, when the troubles broke out he was a Pilot & worked with his Uncle, who was a Pilot.

His Uncle died about two years ago, & left him an House & an Acre & ½ Land at a place called Hell’s Gate near New York, he thinks the House & Land was worth 100 £ being asked whether he can prove this.

He says Mr. MILLER knows & he is therefore desired to procure a Certificate of it, from Mr. MILLER, he served several years as a Pilot to the British Ships, he lost no other property, he has been married & has one Daughter who is in America, but his Wife is Dead, he says that Mr. MILLER knew him & knew his Situation.

He is desired, therefore to procure a Certificate from Mr. MILLER of his Services & property.

Entd.  —  Decision


The whole of this Case, depending upon the Certificate of Mr. MILLER, which is not produced, we conclude that it cannot be produced as a Month has elapsed since it was required & therefore we think that we shall do no injustice to Mr. READING in saying that he is not entitled to expect any thing from Government.
