This painting of some of the children of Philip and Catherine VAN CORTLAND was kindly donated for our use by Barrie Clifford, their 4th great grandson.
Barrie, who resides in the U.K., writes that he would love to make contact with any descendants of Philip and Catherine. You can contact him by dropping a note to Todd Braisted. The painting was probably done in 1778, but may date from a couple of years earlier, sometime between when the family was forced to leave their home in Hanover, New Jersey in 1776 and when they were evacuated from New York City in 1783. The original picture is in pastel on some type of bone, ivory or horn veneer and measures 7 x 5 inches. The signature appears to say "J. Jaques."
