The painting was probably done in 1778, but may date from a couple of years earlier, sometime between when the family was forced to leave their home in Hanover, New Jersey in 1776 and when they were evacuated from New York City in 1783.

The children, from left to right are:

Catherine, aged 13, who m. Dr. William GOURLAY and has descendants in Scotland.

Sarah, aged 5, who died unmarried.

The baby, who would have been either Jacob Ogden, b. 1777 if the painting was done in 1778, or Richard Welling, b. 1775, d. 1778 in New York City if the painting was done earlier.

Mary, aged 15, who m. John ANDERSON.

Gertrude, aged 7, who m. Adm. Sir Edward BULLER.

Elizabeth, aged 13, who m. William TAYLOR and eventually returned to Perth Amboy, NJ. (Catherine and Elizabeth were twins, so it is impossible to say which is which).

The original picture is in pastel on some type of bone, ivory or horn veneer and measures 7 x 5 inches. The signature appears to say "J. Jaques." If anyone is familiar with this artist, we would very much like to learn more and would appreciate your contacting us.
