We have received a number of requests for lists of reading materials that would be suitable for children. The following list has been compiled based on the recommendations of others.

Discusses the causes, events, campaigns, personalities, and aftermath of the American Revolution. Suitable for older children.

Title My Brother Sam Is Dead.
Publisher Scholastic. 2005.
Recounts the tragedy that strikes the Meeker family during the Revolution. The family is split when the central figure's brother fights on the Patriot side while his father is a Loyalist. The boy is torn about which side he is on since both sides have reasonable explanations for their behaviors. Suitable for Grade 4 and above.

This book is set just before the American Revolution in Salem, Massachusetts where Daniel West's father, a physician, has taken a Loyalist stand. Daniel finds himself pulled in many directions as his friends and associates make different choices. Suitable for Grade 5 and above.

Title Traitor: The Case of Benedict Arnold (Unforgettable Americans).

This book recounts not only what Arnold did but why it was so important to the British and so devastating to the Americans. It also gives some of the reasons why Arnold fell from being the patriot hero at Ticonderoga to the epitome of villainy such a short time later. Suitable for Grade 5 and above.

Twelve-year-old Ned Seaman tells this lively (fictional) tale of his family's perilous journey to Canada. Suitable for Grade 5 and above.

This is a sequel to Escape: Adventures of a Loyalist Family, and it chronicles the later adventures of the Seamans as they make a fresh start in Canada. Suitable for Grade 5 and above.

A historical picture book that describes for young readers what it was like for loyalists who fled the American colonies during the Revolution to come to Canada. Filled with games and projects like building your own model cannon and playing capture the flag. Suitable for Grade 4 and above.

An independent, feisty eleven-year-old girl named Kitty flees to Halifax from Boston with her family in 1776, but develops a Great Plan to return to find her Uncle Tommy who joined the Rebel forces to the dismay of the family. Suitable for Grade 5 and above.

Title Changes For Felicity (American Girl Collection).

One of the books accompanying the American Girls series of dolls, this book tells the story of Felicity and her family, who are Patriots, and her grandfather and best friend Elizabeth, who are Loyalists. When Elizabeth's father is jailed for being loyal to the King, Felicity has to deal with the effects of this on her friendship with Elizabeth. Suitable for Grade 3 and above.
