For seven years, Bergen County, New Jersey lay adjacent to the British Army in New York City and its outposts. Its population mirrored that of many other areas of the colonies, with a strong cadre of Loyalist inhabitants, realizing the worst of a civil war.
Chapters on Loyalists include two by Todd - those on the Loyalists of the county and the refugees under Thomas Ward, as well as one by Arnold E. Brown on the county’s Black Loyalists.
