An Oath drawn up by the Rebel General Lee for Philip VAN CORTLAND to Subscribe, to ensure him protection & permission to return to his family in the County of Morris 1776,

“I ........... do most religiously and solemnly swear in the presence of Almighty God that I will not give or cause to be given to the King’s Army or fleet, or to any Officers Civil or Military under him any intelegence of any kind, that I will not knowingly receive any letters or Messages from them, & that those I shall receive unknowingly shall be disclosed to the General Commanding the Continental Troops.

I do also swear that I will not by my conversation by hints or even insinuations or suggestions endeavours to slacken the Zeal of those who are embarked in the service of the United States for the preservation of American Rights.

And still more particularly I do swear, as I hope for eternal salvation, that I will not endeavour to encrease the number of the King’s adherents.”
