General Court Martial of Patrick Moore

[Extract of the General Court Martial whereof Colonel Edmund FANNING was President, held at Kingsbridge, between 10 July 1777 and 17 July 1777.]

Wednesday 16th [July 1777.]

The Court being met according to Adjournment proceeded to the tryal of Patrick MOORE Soldier Prince of Wales’s Royal American Volunteers and Capt: BRIDGEWATERs Company brought prisoner before the Court for Desertion.

Thomas HICKFORD, Farmer and in the West Chester Militia being duly Sworn deposeth, that sometime ago he was sitting at one VALENTINE’s house in West Chester, that one MORREL came in and said there were some Soldiers going along who he believed were Deserters,

that he and four more immediately pursued them, and tho’ he walk’d faster than the rest the Prisr. got out of Sight, he met a Negroe with a horse which he got from him came up with the Prisr. who had a Great Coat on, and told him he must come back which the Prisr. agreed to immediately.

The Depont. being ask’d by the Court if he thought the Prisr. drunk when he came up to him? he answers he did not appear so to him.

The Prisr. being put on his Defence says that he did not intend to desert that he had been drinking freely in the morning and took a walk out of Camp, about a Quarter of a Mile where he drank more and when overtaken by Mr. HICKFORD he did not know where he was going was very willing to come back.

The Prisr. acknowledges to have Recd. his pay, Bounty & Cloathing as a Soldier in the Regimt.

The Court on a due Consideration of the matter before them is of opinion that the Prisr. Patrick MOORE is Guilty of a breach of the 1st Article of the 6th Section of the Articles of War and do therefore Sentence him to receive five hundred Lashes on the bare back with a Cat of nine Tails.

Adjourned to Thursday, 10 o’Clock.
