Loyalist Muster Rolls
Volunteers of Ireland

This unique corps was raised both from recruits and soldiers drafted from other Provincial regiments, principally the Roman Catholic Volunteers and the New Jersey Volunteers.

While this regiment was raised as early as May of 1778, there are no rolls prior to December of that year. After that time the rolls continue through February of 1780, soon after which the regiment sailed to South Carolina. There are no further rolls until February of 1781.

The rolls then mirror those of other Provincials in the South, being only half complete for 1781 with one muster only for 1782. These rolls are in the National Archives of Canada, RG 8, "C" Series, Volumes 1886-1887.

In August of 1782 the Volunteers of Ireland were placed on the Regular Establishment as the 105th Regiment of Foot.

The officers, sergeants and drummers were ordered to embark for Ireland to recruit what was in effect a new regiment, while the veterans of the corps raised in America were drafted to other Provincial regiments serving in Charlestown, particularly the Prince of Wales American Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers and DeLancey's Brigade.

There are four musters for the regiment while under the designation 105th Regiment. They are in Great Britain, Public Record Office, War Office, Class 12, Volume 9967. These musters cover the period from October, 1782 to the regiment's disbanding in January, 1784.

For additional information on this regiment please see the Regimental History of the Volunteers of Ireland.
