Loyalist Muster Rolls
British Legion

The British Legion was originally raised at New York in August of 1778.

It pulled together several formerly independent units, including the Philadelphia Light Dragoons, the Caledonian Volunteers, and Kinloch's Light Dragoons.

It also procured men from several units that were being drafted shortly thereafter, such as the Royal American Reformees and the West Jersey Volunteers. In 1780 the troop of Bucks County Light Dragoons also became a permanent part of the Legion.

The regiment went on the American Establishment as the 5th American Regiment in 1781. On 25 December 1782 the cavalry of the Legion was made a regular regiment of the British Army.

For additional information on this regiment please see the Regimental History of the British Legion.

The muster rolls of the British Legion can be found primarily in the National Archives of Canada, RG 8, "C" Series, Volumes 1883-1885. Their one muster as a British regiment can be found in Great Britain, Public Record Office, War Office, Class 12, Volume 11099.
